Downtown | The LBJ MLK Crossroads Memorial is a visible monument at the corner of LBJ and MLK Drives in San Marcos, Texas, honoring the historic efforts of President Lyndon Baines Johnson and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., in forging the most significant Civil Rights legislation since the Civil War. The establishment of the memorial has been a long collaboration. The collaboration included the City of San Marcos, Hays County, and Texas State University.
Located at the unique crossroads of LBJ Drive and MLK Drive -- the only American intersection bearing the names of both of these leaders in the long, difficult, and momentous struggle for racial equality, justice, and freedom -- the Crossroads Memorial will transform a major gateway to historic, downtown San Marcos into a place of beauty, inspiration, and community legacy for generations to come.
The site of the Crossroads Memorial is within walking distance of some of the most significant cultural and historic sites in San Marcos. The nearby LBJ Museum emphasizes the importance of LBJ's years as a student at what is now Texas State University, San Marcos. The Calaboose African American History Museum, located on MLK Drive, contains an incomparable collection of artifacts and memories of the African-American experience in San Marcos. The Dunbar Historic District, settled in the 1880s, with MLK Drive as its main street, was home to primarily African-American residents after World War II. And El Centro Cultural Hispano de San Marcos, at the corner of Lee Street and LBJ Drive, brings to life the vibrant and inspiring story of Hispanics in San Marcos by preserving, developing, promoting, and celebrating Hispanic arts, culture, heritage, and values.Â
